#398- Long Live King Kobe

On December 23, 2020, twenty-one-year-old Tyler Kobe Nichols was randomly murdered in a knife attack after getting a haircut just blocks away from his family’s Brooklyn home.   This senseless murder changed Tyler's family forever.  Today, we are joined by Tyler's mother, Sherma Chambers, his cousin, Kareem Eusebe, and photographer, Spencer Ostrander.  Together, they have documented the void left in Tyler's family, the healing process, and the start of The Long Live King Kobe Foundation.  We dive deep into their story and purpose, and many aspects of creating this new, powerful book.  Coming out on May 10th, Long Live King Kobe is a must read for everyone.  The power of healing is something special, and Sherma, Kareem, and Spencer have certainly provided a great example of just that.

We are joined by the creator of Hydroflask, Travis Rosbach.  Travis has lived a really unique life where he has spent time as a boat captain, a commercial airline pilot, and an entrepeneur.   Prior to his sale of the company, Hydroflask  went on to become the number one water bottle in the world. Travis now advises, consults, and provides sourcing fo vairous industries and individuals with The Tumalo Group.  Travis was a great interview.  He provides lots of funny stories, business insight, and just an overall great conversation.  Check it out!

As the years have gone by, we continue to talk to musicians that we never thought we'd get a chance to talk to.  Today is one of those days.  We are joined by leadsinger and keyboardist of Styx, Lawrence Gowan.  Gowan has been with the band for over 20 years and continues to entertain Styx's loyal fanbase on the regular.  We chat about everything from what is what like join such an established band, the band's legacy, maintaining the ability to be a front man, and even his role in a movie called Wolfcop.  Yes, Wolfcop.  Lawrence really was a great guest, with lot of insight into the music industry, a great sense of humor,and lots of great stories.  Go check out Styx on tour today!

We have returned to entertain you and so has our guest. Musician MacKenzie Grant joins us as she just announced her return to music after a 15-year break with the upcoming release of her sophomore album Wonder World via BlackBird Record Label. The album was inspired by her time spent over the past decade working as a school counselor in a high-poverty and high-trauma preschool. MacKenzie tells us her original journey in music, her break and coming back, and music life with a family.

Happy New Year everybody.  Today, we start the year off with a great interview with Nathan Gray, lead singer of the post hardcore/ punk band, BoySetsFire.  Today, Nathan is off and running with his new solo project, with his band The Iron Roses and their new album, Rebel Songs.  We had a great discussion about Nathan's roots, coping with his childhood of sexual abuse, and his creative process.  A truly great start to the new year.

Now I know it has been a whole week since we’ve been with you, and your go through some emotions, but we have a guest here that’s here to talk you down. Scott Tillema has worked with Chicago police department and an FBI trained hostage negotiator. We discuss the road to doing negotiations and his reasoning to go into the field, the techniques in dealing with these situations, and his work now in teaching organizations how to use these technique principles to enhance their work. Scott was very informative and fun to speak with, so take a breather, let all the fans in the room free, and check out this interview.

Back again, with Frank Meyer, of the long time LA punk band, The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs.  The Cheetahs have been making music together for decades, but are finally returning with a new album entitled, "One More Drink" after 20 years.  Frank was a hilarious guy, with tons of great stories and music insight.  We discuss playing music in the pandemic, reuniting with the Cheetahs, drinking, and even learn about Frank playing music from Schoolhouse Rock.  Go check out the new album today!

#359-Dr. Mark Nelson

As most of us are finally getting to go out and experience the world again, we decided to chat with someone who volunteered to lock himself away for multiple years. Dr Mark Nelson joins us to talk about the Biosphere 2 project that had eight scientists living in an enclosed environment for two years. We dive into the environmental study, the work put into constructing the dome, and thoughts looking back on the project.....and the Paulie Shore movie. #351-Clark Fredericks

Today, we bring you an episode unlike any other that we have recorded in the past 7 years.  Clark Fredericks is a survivor of horrific childhood sexual abuse at the hands of his former Scoutmaster, Dennis Pegg.  After years of drug and alcohol abuse, living with the weight of his molestation, and spinning out of control, Clark ran into his abuser, and went on to murder him later that day.  Clark was sentenced to prison, but was released only 5 years later with massive support from not only the enitre community, but from people all over the world as his story made national headlines.  Clark has gone on to become a motivational speaker, has helped changed the statute of limitiation for victims, and continues to help victims all over.  Clark' story is filled with tragedy, but also filled with light, meaning, and overcoming.  We are very glad to have done this interview.  Check it out!

Diego Garijo is an artist, he’s a fighter, he’s a drag queen, and he’s got a fascinating story to talk about this week with us. We dive into his amazing story from being smuggled over into the states, to a rough life that saw him learn to fight, the struggles after an injury made him stop, getting back into bare knuckle brawling, and how a class he took led to him performing as Lola Pistola. Matt shares his stories of what led him to explore there, the culture and etiquette in speaking with people who live in these communities, and the work done to help people get out of the environment with his program Shine a Light. Bill Foster went from teaching and being a superintendent, to an actor, writer, and now producing movies based on his Westerns. Bill tells us how he went from retirement to working on shows like Fear the Walking Dead and working with the Coen Brothers. We chat about his books Showdown at the Brazos and Showdown at the Guadalupe and turning them into movies he’s producing. Oh yeahhhh!  You've heard the Kool Aid Man shout this since you were a child, but today you can hear it shouted on the podcast by the man himself, Frank Simms.  Frank was a really amazing guest with some hilariously entertaining stories.  We chat about everything from being the voice of the Kool Aid Man, to singing with the like of David Bowie and Madonna, to being a voice on Grand Theft Auto.  Frank has done so many neat things, and best of all he is a hysterical interview and great guy.  Check it out!

Oh baby, do we have a sweet on for you today.  The NHL is back, and with that,we bring in the man who is in charge of sports' greatest trophy, The Stanley Cup.  We chat with Phil Pritchard, the man who is in charge of the safety, the travel, and the traditions of Lord Stanley.  Phil is also the curator for the Hockey Hall of Fame.  Phil share some amazing stories about his travels with the cup, what players have done with it, and where the cup is at now during the pandemic.  What a great interview.  Put on your white gloves and have a listen!

He gives us the story of how he got his tryout into NASCAR, his vibes from the garage/fans in his career, and his thoughts on what Bubba is going through with social justice. We had a great discussion with Bill and look forward to his memoir coming out down the road.

The guys sit down with Wix Patton, a former UGA football player turned music star. We discuss how a night at a comedy club with his teammates pushing him led to him pursuing music, the feeling of hearing his song before a bowl game, the conversation he had with the NCAA, and how he has doubled down on his passion for music. A great interview with a man born with a great hip-hop name, check out Wix’s latest song “Gelato Glued” now and his debut EP “Everything, OK” coming out later this year.

#310-Nappy Roots

Awnaw.  Hell na.  We done up and done it.  This week, we had the pleasure of interviewing Skinny and Scales, of the long time rap group, Nappy Roots.  We had a really great conversation that ranged in topics from the evolution of the group, early rap names, making music in the current environment, and the group's love of making and drinking craft beer.  Skinny and Scales were a ton of fun to talk to, and it certainly comes through in this interview.  Check out their new single "Blind Faith" today!

Happy 4th of July America! However, today we go across the pond to London, to interview Northern Irish singer, Janet Devlin.  Janet is a well accomplished musician who has released several albums, performed all over the world, and finished 5th on The X Factor in 2011.  Janet was a great interview.  In a great open discussion, we touched on Janet's struggles with alcohol, eating disorders, and relationships.  We also discussed her music, her upcoming projects, and even her feelings about John Frusciante rejoining the Chili Peppers.  Have a listen!

Today, we get extreme.  Well, really we interview a man who takes extreme to a new level.  Luke Aikins joins the show today, and man was he interesting. Luke is a professional skydiver, BASE jumper, pilot, and aerial photographer.  He is also a Redbull athlete.  Oh yea, he is also the first person to jump out of a plane and land without a parachute.  Luke was a terrific interview.  We discuss his skydiving origins, his career, and where his career has taken him.  Great interview.  Have a listen!
