We’re heading back to our second home as Verbal Shenanigans returns to Georgetown, Colorado. Steve Skalski is the founder of Guanella Pass Brewery and was not only gracious enough to give us time, but also send us some of their Bernese Mountain Brown Ale, made in honor of Mayor Parker the Snow Dog. Hear the story of how Steve met mayor Parker, learn more about the area and their brewery, and why burrows come by every year.

If you watched Bones or CSI, you may have heard the term “Body Farm”…tonight we are farming. To be technical the proper term is Decomposition Facility as our guest Rebecca L George, PhD explained to us. She is the Assistant Director of Forensic Anthropology Facilities and Instructor of Anthropology for the facility at Western Carolina University. We learn her path to here, the process to volunteer bodies, and the environment where they study. Learning and laughing with this great interview.

#436-Jordan Hatmaker

In November 2021, Jordan Hatmaker jumped from an airplane over 13,000 feet in the air, had her parachute get entangled with her leg, hit the ground at 80 MPH, and after all that, she is on our show smiling and laughing telling us the story. We chat about the emotions of the situation, the recovery, and how she even got a date from a photo in her hospital bed.

#398- Long Live King Kobe

On December 23, 2020, twenty-one-year-old Tyler Kobe Nichols was randomly murdered in a knife attack after getting a haircut just blocks away from his family’s Brooklyn home.   This senseless murder changed Tyler's family forever.  Today, we are joined by Tyler's mother, Sherma Chambers, his cousin, Kareem Eusebe, and photographer, Spencer Ostrander.  Together, they have documented the void left in Tyler's family, the healing process, and the start of The Long Live King Kobe Foundation.  We dive deep into their story and purpose, and many aspects of creating this new, powerful book.  Coming out on May 10th, Long Live King Kobe is a must read for everyone.  The power of healing is something special, and Sherma, Kareem, and Spencer have certainly provided a great example of just that.

Musician MacKenzie Grant joins us as she just announced her return to music after a 15-year break with the upcoming release of her sophomore album Wonder World via BlackBird Record Label. The album was inspired by her time spent over the past decade working as a school counselor in a high-poverty and high-trauma preschool. MacKenzie tells us her original journey in music, her break and coming back, and music life with a family.

Scott Tillema has worked with Chicago police department and an FBI trained hostage negotiator. We discuss the road to doing negotiations and his reasoning to go into the field, the techniques in dealing with these situations, and his work now in teaching organizations how to use these technique principles to enhance their work. #359-Dr. Mark Nelson

As most of us are finally getting to go out and experience the world again, we decided to chat with someone who volunteered to lock himself away for multiple years. Dr Mark Nelson joins us to talk about the Biosphere 2 project that had eight scientists living in an enclosed environment for two years. We dive into the environmental study, the work put into constructing the dome, and thoughts looking back on the project.....and the Paulie Shore movie. #351-Clark Fredericks

Today, we bring you an episode unlike any other that we have recorded in the past 7 years.  Clark Fredericks is a survivor of horrific childhood sexual abuse at the hands of his former Scoutmaster, Dennis Pegg.  After years of drug and alcohol abuse, living with the weight of his molestation, and spinning out of control, Clark ran into his abuser, and went on to murder him later that day.  Clark was sentenced to prison, but was released only 5 years later with massive support from not only the enitre community, but from people all over the world as his story made national headlines.  Clark has gone on to become a motivational speaker, has helped changed the statute of limitiation for victims, and continues to help victims all over.  Clark' story is filled with tragedy, but also filled with light, meaning, and overcoming.  We are very glad to have done this interview.  Check it out!

Diego Garijo is an artist, he’s a fighter, he’s a drag queen, and he’s got a fascinating story to talk about this week with us. We dive into his amazing story from being smuggled over into the states, to a rough life that saw him learn to fight, the struggles after an injury made him stop, getting back into bare knuckle brawling, and how a class he took led to him performing as Lola Pistola. Diego is passionate about his arts and a fascinating human to chat with. Be on the look out for his documentary, but find out his story here first.

Dr. Randy Lewis is a professor of molecular biology and tells us about the process of genetically modifying goats to produce spider silk. We talk the science of the procedure, the benefits of spider silk, the future of their work, and what is like to work on a spider goat farm.  It was quite an interesting science conversation.
